Chess Character Concepts
Taking the abstract game of chess and recontextualizing it as a battle between Angels and Demons. The built in hierarchy that both angels (cherub, angel, archangel, etc.) and demons (imp, horseman, etc.) work in congruity with the royal court motif chess has at its core
I then refine my favorite the thumbnails to basic sketches alongside one another to help determine size and shape consistency between the designs.
I begin with simple thumbnails, planing not only the characters I'd like to create but environments for them to exist in as well. This is where I determine the tone and general feel of the designs.
The final color pallet was chosen to be simple yet cohesive to further enforce the dichotomy of the opposing sides while also tying back into the chess concept foundation.
